Troubleshooting: Before You Call Us

Try these simple fixes to save a service call fee.

Check the Safety Sensors (The #1 Culprit)

If your gate opens properly but won’t close, the safety sensors are likely triggered.

Look: Are there leaves, spider webs, or mud covering the lens of the “photo eyes” near the ground?

Action: Wipe them clean with a cloth. If the sensor lights turn solid (stop blinking), try the remote again.

Check the “Hold Open” Switch

Many intercoms or keypads have a “Party Mode” or “Hold Open” toggle switch.

Action: Check your keypad or indoor wall button to ensure it wasn’t accidentally flipped to the “Open” position by a landscaper or guest.

Check the Breaker

Did you have a storm recently?

Action: Check your main electrical panel and the GFCI outlet near the gate. A power surge may have tripped the circuit.

Common Emergency Repairs We Perform

If the DIY tips didn’t work, you likely have a hardware failure. We handle:

Gate Stuck Closed (Entrapment)

If you are trapped inside or outside:

Manual Release: We can arrive quickly to manually disengage the motor and get the gate open so you can get to work.

Battery Failure: If your solar gate is dead, we replace the deep-cycle marine batteries and test the regulator.

napped Chains & Belts (Sliding Gates)

A sliding gate relies on a heavy-duty chain. If the chain snaps or jumps off the sprocket:

The Fix: We re-tension the chain, replace broken links, or install a brand new nickel-plated chain that resists rust.

Lightning Strike Damage

Texas storms are notorious for frying gate electronics.

The Fix: We diagnose “dead” boards. If your circuit board is fried, we can often replace just the board rather than the entire motor, saving you thousands.

Physical Damage (Hit by Car)

Accidents happen. If a delivery driver backed into your gate:

The Fix: We offer mobile welding services. We can cut out bent bars, weld on new hinges, and straighten the frame to get it moving again.

We Service All Gate Types

The "Manual Release" Guide

WARNING: Never try to operate a gate manually while the motor is still engaged. You will strip the gears.

  1. Every motor has a manual release mechanism for power outages:
  2. LiftMaster/Chamberlain: Look for a key slot on the motor arm or box. Insert the key and turn 180 degrees to unlock the handle.
  3. Viking/Apollo: Look for a toggle switch or a release lever inside the control box.
  4. Can’t find it? Call us. We can talk you through it over the phone or send a tech to help.

Common Emergency Gate Issues & Solutions

How do I open my gate if the power is out?

Don’t force it. Every electric gate operator has a dedicated Manual Release Mechanism

  • For Sliding Gates: Look for the black motor box. There is usually a small door or handle that locks with a key. Unlock it and pull the release lever (often red) to disengage the chain drive. You can then push the gate open by hand.

  • For Swing Gates: Locate the arm attached to the gate. There is a release key slot on the top or side of the arm. Insert the key and turn it 180 degrees to detach the internal gears.

A continuous or periodic beep is an audible distress signal from the control board, usually indicating Battery Failure.

  • Most modern gates (LiftMaster/Viking) run on battery backup. If the batteries are old (2+ years) and can no longer hold a charge, the system beeps to warn you that the gate may shut down soon. Call us to swap them for new high-amp-hour marine batteries.

Probably not. This is the #1 service call we receive, and it is almost always a Safety Sensor (Photo-Eye) issue.

  • The Cause: The sensors shoot an invisible beam across the driveway. If leaves, dirt, spiderwebs, or even heavy rain block this beam, the gate “thinks” a car is in the way and refuses to close for safety.

  • The Fix: Wipe the sensor lenses clean. If the small LED lights on the sensors stop blinking and turn solid, try closing the gate again.

“Ghost opening” is a frustrating security issue. It is typically caused by one of three things:

  1. Radio Interference: A neighbor’s device or a nearby cell tower is transmitting on the same frequency as your remote.

  2. Faulty Exit Loop: The buried wire sensor in your driveway may be damaged by shifting soil, triggering a false “car approaching” signal.

  3. Moisture: Water may have entered the control box or keypad, creating a short circuit on the “Open” command board.

Standard mechanical arms effectively hold a gate shut against wind, but a determined intruder could potentially force them.

  • For Maximum Security: We recommend installing a Magnetic Lock (Maglock). This electromagnet engages automatically when the gate closes, providing 1,200 lbs of holding force that makes it nearly impossible to force the gate open without a vehicle.
