Ask The Pros: Real Answers from Local Experts

“Who is actually coming to my house?”

It is the most common worry homeowners have. In an industry full of confusing call centers and subcontractors, Coppell Garage Door Pros does things differently. We are a tight-knit team of local professionals.

We don’t use scripts. We use experience.

Below, we have gathered the toughest, most frequent questions we receive in the field. We sat down with our Owner, Lead Technicians, and Dispatch Manager to give you the honest, unfiltered answers you deserve.

Mark Stevens | Founder & Owner

Experience: 25 Years | Focus: Business Ethics & Operations
"My rule is simple: If I wouldn't do it to my grandmother's house, we won't do it to yours. I oversee every quote to ensure our 'No Hidden Fees' promise is kept."

Mark, how do I know I’m getting a fair price? I’ve heard horror stories.

Mark: “You are right to be cautious. The industry is plagued by ‘Bait and Switch’ tactics, companies advertising a $19 service call, only to charge $800 for a simple spring repair once they are in your garage. Here is how we are different: We provide a Total Cost Quote after our inspection but before we touch a single tool. This quote includes parts, labor, and tax. If the job turns out to be harder than we thought, that is my problem, not yours. The price we quote is the price you pay. Period.”
Mark: “A franchise has to send 10-15% of your money back to a corporate headquarters in another state. We are 100% local. That means your money stays in Coppell. It also means I can buy higher quality parts (like 25k cycle springs) because I’m not forced to buy the cheap ‘corporate standard’ hardware.”

Mark: “They are W-2 employees. This is huge. Sub-contractors get paid by the job, so they are incentivized to rush. My guys are hourly employees with performance bonuses for quality, not speed. They drive our trucks, wear our uniforms, and I cover their insurance.”

Mark: “We offer a 1-Year Labor Warranty on repairs. If a spring we installed snaps or a sensor we aligned drifts out of place, we come back and fix it for free. For new installations, we match the manufacturer’s warranty, which is often ‘Lifetime’ on the door sections.”

“Yes. We carry $2 Million in General Liability insurance and full Workers’ Compensation. If a heavy garage door accidentally falls on your car during a repair (which has never happened, but still), you are fully protected. Never hire a ‘guy with a truck’ who doesn’t have insurance.”

David Ross | Residential Service Tech

Experience: 5 Years | Focus: Springs, Cables & Hardware
"I’m the first responder. When your car is trapped at 7:00 AM, my goal is to get your door safe and operational in under 60 minutes."

David, I heard a loud 'BANG' and the door won't lift. What do I do?

David: “That is a broken torsion spring. Do not touch the red emergency cord. If you pull that release while the spring is broken, the door becomes dead weight (300+ lbs) and will crash down. Leave it closed and call us. I can be there in an hour to swap the springs safely.”
“I strongly advise against it. Torsion springs are under extreme tension. One slip with a winding bar can break a wrist or cause facial injuries. Plus, the springs you buy online are often ‘standard cycle’ (10,000 uses). The ones I carry on the truck are ‘high cycle’ (25,000 uses) and are properly sized for your specific door weight.”
“Grinding is usually metal-on-metal friction. It’s likely you have old steel rollers and the bearings are shot. I recommend upgrading to Nylon Silent Rollers. They have a ball-bearing center and a nylon wheel. It’s the cheapest upgrade you can make to silence your door instantly.”
“You might have accidentally engaged the ‘Lock Mode.’ If you hold the lock button on the wall console for 3 seconds, it locks out all remotes for security (like when you go on vacation). Check to see if the LED is flashing rapidly. Hold the button again to unlock it.”
“Twice a year. Use a Silicone-based spray (NOT WD-40, which attracts dirt). Spray the hinges, the roller bearings, and the springs. Do not grease the tracks! The tracks should be kept clean and dry; grease in the tracks just collects dust and turns into sticky gunk.”

Not sure what’s broken?

Snap a photo of your broken spring, or record a short video of the noise your door makes. I can usually tell you exactly what’s wrong just by looking at it. so send me an email to DavidR@coppellgaragedoorpros.com or call 972) 914-4863 (Ask to speak with a Tech)

Carlos Mendez | Lead Gate Technician

Experience: 18 Years | Focus: Circuit Boards, Solar & Sensors
"Gates are living electronics in a harsh environment. I specialize in diagnosing the 'ghosts in the machine', wiring faults, solar issues, and interference."

My gate opens but refuses to close. Is the motor fried?

Carlos: “90% of the time, the motor is fine. This is a Safety Sensor (Photo-Eye) issue. If leaves, spiders, or mud block the sensor lens, the gate thinks a car is in the way and stays open to prevent a crash. Wipe the lenses with a dry cloth first. If the sensor lights are solid (not blinking), try the remote again.”

Carlos: “This is usually caused by one of three things: 1) Radio interference from a neighbor’s device. 2) Moisture getting into a cracked control box and shorting the circuit. 3) A faulty ‘Exit Loop’ sensor in your driveway that thinks a car is approaching. I have scanners to diagnose exactly which one it is.”

Carlos: “Yes. Every operator has a manual release. For LiftMaster swing gates, there is a key slot on the arm, turn it 180 degrees to detach the arm. For Sliding Gates, there is usually a handle or foot pedal inside the motor box. I can show you exactly how to use yours during a service call.”

Carlos: “Yes, IF you have the right setup. Cheap kits fail in winter. I install 20-Watt Panels and Dual 35Ah Marine Batteries. This gives you ‘7-Day Autonomy,’ meaning your gate will run for a full week even in total darkness. If you don’t have that battery capacity, you’ll get stuck.”

Carlos: “Ants love the heat from circuit boards. They crawl in, short out the board, and die. It’s a mess. I seal all conduit entries with silicone and place professional ant bait inside the housing. It’s a small step that saves you a $400 circuit board replacement.”

Gate acting weird?

Don’t guess. Open the control box (carefully) and send me a clear photo of the circuit board and any error lights to my email:CarlosM@coppellgaragedoorpros.com. I can often save you a service call fee just by seeing the wiring. or call 972) 914-4863 (Ask to speak with a Carlos)

"Big Mike" Johnson | Installation Lead

Experience: 12 Years | Focus: Custom Fabrication, Welding, New Doors
"Repair is about speed; Installation is about perfection. If a door isn't level to within 1/16th of an inch, it will wear out in a year. I make sure it’s perfect."

Mike, does an insulated garage door really make a difference?

Mike: “Huge difference. A non-insulated door is a heat conductor; it bakes your garage in the Texas summer. A 3-Layer Sandwich Door (Steel + Insulation + Steel) drops the garage temp by 15-20 degrees. It also makes the door much quieter and less ‘rattly’ because the foam core adds structural rigidity.”

Mike: “Yes. We use Tempered Safety Glass (like a car windshield) so it won’t shatter easily. Adding windows to the top panel adds natural light and massive curb appeal. If you are worried about security, we can use ‘Obscure’ or ‘Frosted’ glass so people can’t see inside.”

Mike: “Yes, but we have to be careful. A swing gate usually won’t work because it would hit the ground as it swings ‘uphill.’ In this case, we install a Sliding Gate or a specialized Lift-Hinge that allows the gate to rise as it opens. I measure the slope grade precisely before we build anything.

Mike: “Standard setups need about 12-15 inches. But if you have low ceilings, don’t worry. I can install a Low Clearance Track (double track system) or a Jackshaft Opener. A Jackshaft mounts on the wall beside the door, freeing up your entire ceiling for storage.”
Mike: “I do, but I build them smarter. Wood warps over time. I fabricate a custom steel frame first, then inlay the wood (Cedar or Redwood) into that frame. This gives you the beautiful look of a wood gate, but the steel frame ensures it never sags or drags on the driveway.”

Sarah Miller | Office Manager

Experience: 30 Years | Focus: Scheduling, Insurance & Customer Care
"I’m the voice on the phone. I know you’re stressed, so I make the process simple. No hold music, no robots—just help."

Sarah, I’m stuck! How fast can you get here?

Sarah: “We treat trapped cars as priority emergencies. We keep ‘buffer slots’ in our schedule every morning and afternoon. If you call before 2:00 PM, we can almost always get a technician to you the Same Day. If it’s after hours, we have an on-call tech for emergencies.”

Sarah: “It helps, but it’s not required. If you can give us a garage code or hide a key, our technician can call you from the driveway. He can FaceTime you to show you the broken parts, explain the quote, and take payment over the phone once the job is done.”

“We do work with them, but a word of advice: Check your deductible first. Often, our repair price is lower than your $100 or $150 deductible, and we can get it done today without waiting 3 days for the warranty company to ‘approve’ the work order.”

“We accept all major credit cards (Visa, MasterCard, Amex), checks, and cash. Our technicians carry iPads with secure card readers, so you get a digital receipt emailed to you instantly.”

Sarah: “Our main hub is Coppell, but we service the surrounding neighbors too. We go to Valley Ranch, Lewisville, Grapevine, Flower Mound, and Carrollton. If you aren’t sure, just give me a call!”
